How to take care about the animals you are raising during the quarantine and pandemic COVID-19?
It is recommended to take care about feed, litter, maintenance means of the keeping location and other veterinary goods needed for the pet’s health in advance (they may be purchased online and in working veterinary pharmacies). Besides, it is very important to keep animals in regularly ventilated premises. If the animal’s owner is forced to self-isolate, s/he has to make arrangements with the relatives, neighbours or to find certain institution that could take care about the animal temporarily. If the animal has health problems, the owner should consult a veterinary surgeon by phone first of all during the quarantine and follow his/her instructions. The non-emergency scheduled surgeries (e.g., castration) should be postponed for some time. Although practice of veterinary surgeons is not forbidden, only the emergency veterinary aid should be provided to animals and not necessary services should not be provided (e.g., hair cutting, bathing, nail cutting, etc.). Each animal keeper has to consider in advance who and how could take care about his/her pet in case of extraordinary situation, when the keeper needed to quarantine not at home. It is recommended to consult family members, neighbours, friends or acquaintances – whether they would agree to help in such a situation. The animal keepers should learn about possibilities of dog hotels or shelter organizations to accept the pet for temporary care. The veterinary specialists advise to leave all the animal-related information to such persons (vaccination books, medicine, etc.). If possible, the acquaintances and neighbours should be also asked to take care about household animals. If the animal’s owner is taken to a medical institution and s/he lives alone, the municipality or eldership and territorial unit of the State Food and Veterinary Service should be notified thereof without delay (by toll-free 24/7 phone number 8 800 40403, stating the name, surname, animal’s location and type, and all the information necessary to safeguard the animal’s welfare).
